A clogged air filter can seriously affect your car's functioning on many counts. It can reduce your car's power, something you surely need while driving on any inclined surface or a ramp. Possibly more significant is the effect a closed air filter has on your car's mileage. It takes just 10 minutes to replace this filter and typically costs under $20. This article offers a few easy steps that can help you to carry out this job with considerable ease.

Find and Open the Filter Housing: Hook up the bonnet hood safely and locate the air filter housing. In any car manufactured in the last 20 years, it is contained in a black colored plastic case bound by metal clips on the sides. You will also notice a black tube moving into the plastic case. Turn the metal clips downwards. Some housings also have a nut that holds them from the top. If a nut is there unscrew it with a screw driver and store it in a secure location. Then take out the housing top by pushing it up with your hands.

Take out the Old Filter: Your car's air filter (round or rectangular in shape) will comprise of lots of folded paper enclosed with rubber. Prior to removing the dirty filter, observe how it is fixed inside the housing so that you can make sure you know how to put in the new filter properly. Cautiously pull it out, making sure that nothing drops to the bottom of the bonnet box. There might be sticks, trash or even some big bugs trapped in the filter.

Clean the Filter Housing: Take a rag or old cloth and wipe out any dust or dirt from the housing unit. You can also clean it with a vacuum cleaner if necessary.

Attach the New Filter in Place: Insert the new filter in place, making sure to put it in the identical arrangement as the old one that you removed (as in which side up, etc.). Also make sure that you push its rubber gasket completely into the slot in the housing. Not doing so can make it impossible for you to get the housing top back on the filter housing.

Close the Filter Housing: Fix the housing top by pushing it down on the filter housing. Then turn in the screw with the screw driver and move the metal clips upwards to secure the top properly.

The steps mentioned above should help you to change the air filter of your car quite effortlessly. However, if you still face any difficulty with the job you can get it done in an automobile workshop.
